Interest in ADUs Spike Across Seattle
The popularity of building accessory dwelling units (ADUs) has surged in the greater Seattle area due to new regulations promoting secondary housing construction. This is significant in cities like Seattle, where affordable housing shortages persist and ADUs can ease this crisis while generating extra income for property owners. Seattle witnessed a 25% year-over-year increase in ADU permit applications, with 988 ADU permits issued in 2022, a 30% increase from the previous year, and more than four times the pre-regulation number in 2018. However, despite strong demand, ADU completions remain low due to a shortage of contractors with ADU expertise.
